What is the procedure for breast reduction surgery in India?

1. Before the surgery

• Before arriving in India for breast reduction surgery, a patient needs to follow a few instructions. Patients should avoid drinking and smoking starting at least one month before the surgery. Also, the intake of any form of medication, herbal concoctions, and blood-thinners like Aspirin should be strictly avoided. 
• Alongside these instructions, the patient will be asked to undergo a baseline mammogram before the surgery. This will help the surgeon to detect any changes in the breast tissue post-surgery. 

2. Arrival in the country

• As soon as the patient lands in India, the first step is to undergo a comprehensive evaluation by a board-certified plastic surgeon. 
• The surgeon will evaluate the patient’s condition and eligibility to appear for the surgery. A patient will also be advised to undergo a few blood tests that can be also be conducted before arriving in India, depending on the patient’s preference. 
• After the surgeon deems the patient to be eligible for the surgery, the patient and the surgeon schedule a date for the procedure. 
• Breast reduction surgery is generally performed on an outpatient basis and can last for 2 to 5 hours. However, under certain conditions, the patient’s admittance maybe extended to an overnight stay at the hospital.
• The pattern and extent of the incisions will be discussed and decided beforehand. During the surgery, the surgeon will place drains, small tube-like structures, under the skin to avoid blood or fluid accumulation in the abdomen. After removing the excess fat, skin, and glandular tissue, the incisions are stitched back together. This will be followed by dressing or placing bandages around the incisions. 
• As soon as the effect of the sedatives wears off, the patient is allowed to leave the hospital facility or shifted to the recovery room. 

3. After the surgery

• The patient will experience swelling and bruising in the operated area for at least two weeks after the surgery. The surgeon will prescribe painkillers and other medications to deal with these complications.
• The recovery period for breast reduction surgery depends on the patient’s age, weight, health, and complexity of the procedure. Usually, patients can continue with their normal lifestyle after 6 to 8 weeks of the surgery. However, if the patient’s job is not physically demanding, they can switch back to their daily routine after two weeks. 
• The patient will be expected to show compliance with a few post-op care instructions, including:

1. Wear a surgical bra to support healing in the breasts.
2. Follow the prescription course suggested by the doctor.
3. Maintain a healthy and balanced diet. 
4. Switch to sponge baths for at least two weeks after the surgery.
5. Avoid strenuous exercise or physically demanding activities.
