Automatic Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillators (AICD) are used to help treat patients with arrhythmias, or irregular heartbeats. The AICD can be implanted into the abdominal area or the chest, and wires are attached from the device to different parts of the heart. After surgical implantation, the AICD can restore regular heart rhythm by delivering electric pulses or shocks whenever the heart starts to beat abnormally.
