Cataract and Glaucoma Surgery is used to treat two eye conditions at the same time. Cataracts is a condition in which the lens of the eye becomes clouded. Glaucoma is a condition that can result in vision loss due to optic nerve damage. Surgical interventions on the patient can be performed jointly if both conditions are severe. Usually, the cataract is removed using phacoemulsification while the glaucoma is treated through filtering procedures such as trabeculectomy. In phacoemulsification, doctor can use an ultrasonic probe to emulsify the lens of the eye, remove the fragments, and then insert the replacement lens. In trabeculectomy, an incision is made to remove fluid from the eye, thus decreasing eye pressure. There are multiple other surgeries to treat cataracts and glaucoma independently, and doctors may combine them in different manners, depending on the needs of the patient.
