An intrauterine device (IUD) is a small contraceptive device, often 'T'-shaped, often containing either copper or hormones. A doctor inserts the IUD into the uterus. IUD are a form of long-acting reversible contraception. Intrauterine devices offer five or more years of contraception and can be removed any time when fertility is desired. There are strings on the IUD, which will be visible in the upper vagina after the device has been placed. These help to confirm the IUD's placement and also to remove it, when needed.
