Hepatectomy (also known as liver resection or liver removal) is a surgical procedure that involves removal of all or part of the liver. Usually, partial hepatectomies are performed in order to remove abnormal growths on the liver. In hepatectomy the patient is placed under general anesthesia, an incision is made (generally below the ribcage) to access the liver, and the abnormal growths will be removed. The procedure can be performed either via open surgery or laparoscopic surgery.
