Angioplasty is used to remove buildup from the inside of arterial walls, and in general, improve blood flow. In this procedure, the doctor uses a catheter to place a deflated balloon into the blocked area. Inflating the balloon helps reduce or remove the blockage, thus restoring blood flow. In some cases, a stent (small mesh tube) is used alongside the balloon to help keep the artery open.
