Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA) is an opening of the ductus arteriosus (two major blood vessels). This opening can cause circulation problems which can lead to heart failure and other issues. PDA Closure involves closing the opening of the ductus arteriosus. In premature babies, PDA closure can sometimes occur as time passes or with the help of medications. In other situations, open-heart surgery and catheter procedures can be used to close the hole. In the case of the catheter procedure, a catheter is inserted, guided to the heart, and used to insert a plug or coil to close the hole. In the case of open-heart surgery, the surgeon makes an incision between the ribs to access the heart. The PDA then is closed using stitches or clips.
