HBOT-in-Dubai

Each part of the human body needs oxygen to survive. The air we breathe has approximately 21% of this essential gas. However, in some cases, the body requires higher levels of oxygen to carry out even the most basic of its functions. If an individual is suffering from any condition, causing them to have lower oxygen levels in the body, they may be suggested to undergo hyperbaric oxygen therapy

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a treatment that aims to increase the oxygen supply to the lungs and elevate natural immunity as well as stem cell formation and regeneration. Unfortunately, the treatment is not easily available in many countries due to a lack of facilities or long waiting times.

How does hyperbaric oxygen therapy work?

As the name suggests, the therapy involves a chamber where the air pressure is twice more than the normal atmospheric levels.

During the therapy, the patient is placed inside the chamber where they are exposed to higher levels of oxygen. This helps the lungs to absorb the gas to its full capacity, increasing the amount of oxygen in the blood. The increased levels of oxygen help in:

1. Preventing tissue death

A wound or a deep injury often damages the surrounding blood vessels, causing them to swell. The swelling deprives the cells of their basic oxygen needs causing them to die. HBOT helps to curb this swelling by supplying high levels of oxygen to the injury site.

2. Preventing reperfusion injury

During a crush injury, the blood flow to the cells in the surrounding area suddenly stops. This causes the damaged cells to release toxic oxygen radicals, which cause irreversible damage to the entire tissue. HBOT stimulates the body to scavenge or seek out these radicals for smoother recovery and healing.

3. Strengthening the immune system

HBOT has the ability to curb the toxins released by harmful bacteria in order to fight the infection. This is usually done with the help of high oxygen levels that stimulate WBC formation as well as function.

4. Promote and stimulate new growth

High oxygen levels help the body to form new blood vessels in the wounded or injured areas. With the release of certain growth factors, like the endothelial growth factor, the healing in the tissue fastens.

Types of hyperbaric oxygen chambers in Dubai

Different hospitals can have two different types of hyperbaric oxygen therapy chambers, including the monoplace chamber and the multiplace chamber.

  • Monoplace chamber – A monoplace hyperbaric chamber is designed to accommodate only one patient at a time. It is a long, cylindrical tube-like structure composed of plastic material, often resembling an MRI machine. The chamber has a single bed where the patient lies down. The bed is slowly slipped inside the machine and pressurized with 100% oxygen.
  • Multiplace chamber – As the name suggests, a multiplace chamber is designed to treat multiple patients at a given instance of time. The multiplace chamber looks like a small hospital room where a patient can either sit or lie down on the bed wearing a hood or an oxygen mask.

What happens during hyperbaric oxygen therapy in Dubai?

1. Before the treatment

If prescribed an HBOT therapy in Dubai, a patient needs to follow a few instructions for days leading up to the appointment. These include:

  • Avoid taking any medications before or during the treatment. HBOT therapy can interfere with the effects of certain medications like chemotherapy. This should be discussed with the doctor before going ahead with the treatment.
  • Avoid smoking or the use of tobacco before, during, as well as after the treatment.
  • Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
  • Follow a healthy and balanced diet.
  • Avoid going to crowded places in order to minimize any chance of infection before the procedure.
  • Avoid caffeinated and carbonated drinks as they cause blood vessel constriction.

2. During the treatment

  • The patient would be expected to visit the hospital on the scheduled day of the procedure. There are a few instructions that a patient should follow on the day of HBOT therapy
  1. Dress in loose-fitting cotton clothes.
  2. Avoid using any ointments or jelly on the wounded area.
  3. Avoid using body oils, perfumes, lotions, nail polish, and deodorants.
  4. Remove all types of hearing aids, metal-framed eyeglasses, hard contact lenses, jewelry, watches, dentures, and other prosthetic devices before entering the chamber.
  5. Have a light meal at least an hour before the therapy starts.
  • On the day of the therapy, a doctor will ensure that the patient is in a good health to undergo the treatment. This will include checking the patient for conditions like cold and cough as well.
  • The patient will be directed to change into a hospital gown and begin with the process to equalize their ears.
  • A patient will be instructed to do the following before starting with the HBOT therapy:

  1. Pinch the nose and try to blow air through the nose
  2. Intentionally yawn
  3. Take sips of water
  4. Swallow
  • After a few instructions, the patient will be placed inside the hyperbaric chamber, and the air pressure will begin to increase slowly.
  • Depending upon the treatment pressure used for the therapy, the patient may be instructed to breathe from a facemask at regular intervals.
  • The air pressure will slowly increase, become constant, and then slowly decrease, ending the treatment. This takes place in the course of at least 2 hours.

3. After the treatment

  • The patient can experience mild fatigue following HBOT therapy. They may even feel light-headed due to increased blood flow and high oxygen levels in the body.
  • The patient will be examined by a hyperbaric physician to seek out any signs of complications or discomfort. This includes checking the patient’s pulse, ear pressure, and blood glucose levels.
  • The patient can leave the hospital premises with a medical attendant and come back to the hospital during the next scheduled procedure.
