What is the procedure for penile implant surgery?

Before the surgery

• The first step of the surgery usually begins with a comprehensive physical examination conducted by the doctor. 
• After evaluating the patient’s medical history and their expectations, the doctor decides on the type of implant a patient would need. 
• There are two categories of implants that a patient can choose from, including:

1. Malleable Implants – These implants are mechanical devices that provide permanent firmness to the penis, thus will be detectable in clothing. They are also known as semi-rigid implants. 
2. Inflatable implants – Inflatable implants can be inflated and deflated before and after sexual intercourse. They can be further categorized into three-piece and two-piece implants.

During the surgery

• The penile implant surgery is conducted on an outpatient basis and generally lasts between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on the implant and the patient’s condition. 
• The pubic area is cleaned and shaved completely, and the patient is administered with spinal or general anesthesia. 
• A catheter and an IV line are placed to collect the urine and transport antibiotics & medications, respectively. 
• The surgeon makes an incision either at the base or just below the head of the penis. The corpus spongiosum tissue is stretched, and the implants are placed inside according to their shape, size, and type. 

After the surgery

The doctor will describe a set of instructions that have to be followed by the patient for a speedy recovery. These often include:

• Taking antibiotics to avoid the chances of infection
• Taking medication for pain relief
• Avoiding any form of sexual activity, including sexual intercourse and masturbation, for six weeks after the surgery
• Avoiding strenuous exercise or physically demanding activities
• Eating a balanced & healthy diet
• Practicing good hygiene
