Visa to Turkey for Medical Purposes

As per the article 7.1b of “the Law on Foreigners and International Protection” no.6458, foreigners wanting to enter Turkey must carry a travel document/passport with an expiration date at least 60 days beyond the duration of stay on their visa (e-Visa, visa exemption, or residence permit). Medical visa is the type of visa one requires for entering Turkey with a puspose of receiving treatment. The visa can either be obtained from the Consulate of Turkey or through the online Visa or eVisa services. The eVisa can be obtained in advance of arrival through the government’s online visa website

The Electronic Visa (e-Visa) Application System was started by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkey on 17 April 2013. With this system, the visitors wanting to travel to Turkey are allowed to easily apply and obtain e-Visas online through the web portal – www.evisa.gov.tr. The procedure takes just a few minutes and e-Visa can be obtained 7/24 everywhere with internet connection. To obtain the visa, an applicant just needs to fill in the necessary information about their identity, passport and travel dates, followed by visa fee online payment. Fees for e-Visas are comparitively lower than the fees for visas obtained upon arrival on Turkish airports. The visa application process:

The goverment declared that all kinds of applications for Turkish visas will have to be made via the Pre-Application System of Turkish Sticker Visa (regular visa). 

The applicant must upload all the data required for visa applications to the system. After filling the online application, the applicants should apply to the Turkish Missions in order to complete the procedures. This involves submission of their duly signed visa application forms and passports along with the original copies of the required application documents that have been already uploaded on the online system.

For people applying from countries where internet connection is not good enough or the applicants is experiencing difficulties in filling in the application form, visa applications can be made directly to the relevant Turkish Missions in their country. In countries where there is no consular representation for Turkey, applicants can also use online scheduling for appointments with the nearest accredited consular office of Turkey.

The applicants who meet the requirements for eVisa system will be directed by Pre-Application System for Turkish Sticker Visa. The application process is simple with three steps – 

  • Fill the application form online: Depending on the applicant’s nationality, there might be requirement of additional documents. These requirements will be known after the apllicant selects the country of travel document and travel dates.
  • Make payment: A credit or debit card (only Mastercard, Visa or UnionPay) can be used to pay the visa fees. It should be noted that the card does not have to be necessarily under the applican’t name.
  • Download: The link to download the e-Visa is provided on the final step when the application has been completed successfully. In addition, the same link to download the e-Visa will be emailed to the applicant.

General information about visa to Turkey

  • It is highly recommended that travelers who wish to visit Turkey should read the related information about the visa regime:
  • The applicants must know that visas submitted to foreigners do not guarantee absolute rights of entry to Turkey.
  • It is recommended to apply for visas at least one month prior to the planned travel, in order to avoid inconveniences that may be caused by delays in processing.
  • Visa fee is not refundable in cases where applications have been rejected
  • Applicants must have a medical insurance that will be valid throughout the duration of their stay in Turkey.
  • For all types of visa applications, consular offices of Turkey may issue visas with a maximum duration of stay of 90 days. The vistors who wish to stay longer than 90 days in Turkey, must apply for “Short Term Residence Permit” at the Provincial Directorate of Migration Administration for extension of their residence time. The residence permit of the foreigners is cancelled if they stay outside Turkey for more than 120 days in total during the last year.
  • The length of stay as per the visa or visa exemption cannot exceed 90 days within each 180 days. All foreigners travelling to Turkey are subjected to the regulation of 90 days of stay within the last 180 days. It is not possible for foreigners holding two passports to stay in Turkey for 90 days each with their two different passports within the last 180 days.

In accordance with “European Agreement on Regulations governing the Movement of Persons between Member States of the Council of Europe”, the citizens of following countries are allowed to enter Turkey with their national ID’s

  • Germany – Passports expired within the last year or ID has expired within the last year
  • Belgium – Passports expired within the last 5 years.
  • France – Passports expired within the last 5 years.
  • Spain – Passports expired within the last 5 years.
  • Switzerland – Passports expired within the last 5 years.
  • Luxemburg – Passports expired within the last 5 years.
  • Portugal – Passports expired within the last 5 years.
  • Bulgaria – Valid ordinary passport

Documents required for Turkey Visa Application

An applicant must be ready with certain important documents they will be required to submit in order to apply for a medical tourism visa:

  • Original passport with valid for a minimum of six months from the return date of travel. 
  • A minimum of two blank pages available on the passport for visa stamps. 
  • Copies of their old passports that has their previous travel information. They must be duly filled and signed by the applicant.
  • Two recent passport size photographs with 80 percent face coverage, white background and no borderlines. The photographs should be matt finish or semi-matt finish with dimensions of 2.5”x 2.5. Also, they shouldn’t be used in any form prior to the visa application.
  • A cover letter from the applicant mentioning the applicant’s name, passport details, travel dates with the reason and length of the visit. The letter should be duly signed by authorized signatory and have a company stamp. It must addressed to the Consulate General of the Republic of Turkey.
  • Confirmation of Hotel bookings as per travel itinerary 
  • The confirmed return air ticket showing travel itinerary
  • Travel insurance and medical insurance is mandatory for a person traveling to Turkey.

Extension Of The Visa

The Turkish eVisa has a validity of a total of 90 days during a 180-day period. Visitors who are in Turkey and wish to extend their tourist visa, can visit immigration officials, a police station, or an embassy to know the necessary steps that you can take. If a person wants to remain in Turkey for a period of more than 90 days, they should either apply for a longer stay visa before the travel, or get a residence permit by applying to the nearest Provincial Directorate of Migration Management or local authorities in Turkey before their 90 day stay validity has elapsed. There might be the possibility to extend the visa based on the reason for the need of extension, initial reason for visiting, and nationality.

In case of overstay than the visa’s validity, the foreigner might have to pay fines, get deported or even get banned from future travel to Turkey for a specific period of time.
