Eligibility criteria for Ghanaians applying for Indian Medical Visa

An individual holding a Ghanaian passport will be granted a medical visa if they fulfil the following criteria – 

  1. The purpose of traveling to India is restricted to receiving medical treatment. 
  2. The facility selected for the treatment is a reputed hospital or healthcare center recognized by the Government of India.
  3. A maximum of 2 family members or close associates plans to accompany the patient as their medical attendants. The designated medical attendants will have to apply for a separate ‘Medical attendant Visa.’
  4. The patient and the medical attendants can present valid certificates for the Yellow fever and Oral Polio Vaccination. 

Patients seeking treatment for neurosurgery, joint replacements, ophthalmic disorders, renal disorders, cardiac problems, congenital disorders, organ transplantations, radiotherapy, plastic surgery, and gene therapy will be given primary consideration for a medical visa. 

Checklist of documents required for Indian Medical Visa Application 

  1. A printed copy of the Indian Visa Application form containing complete and accurate details, a recent photo, and the authentic signature of the applicant
  2. Original Ghanaian passport with at least 6 months validity and two blank pages available for the Indian visa stamp
  3. A clear photocopy of the passport bio-page highlighting essential details like birthdate, passport validity, address, etc.
  4. Two clear and recent passport size photographs of the applicant with a white background
  5. State issued driver’s license or 3-month-old utility bills serving as a proof of residence
  6. Certificate for Yellow fever vaccination and Oral Polio Vaccination (OPV) for applicants above 6 months of age, acquired two weeks before arrival in India.
  7. Copy of passport and necessary documents confirming the attendant’s residence and relationship with the patient
  8. An official referral letter issued by a local hospital/healthcare center in Ghana confirming the applicant’s medical condition and necessity of treatment in India
  9. An official invitation letter from the referred hospital/treatment center in India listing the doctor’s name, details of the treatment plan, and the name and passport number of the patient, as well as the attendant
  10. Copy of Visa invitation letter from hospital/healthcare center in India.
  11. Medical records highlighting the detailed diagnosis of patient’s illness, including medical test reports, CT scans, MRI, etc.
  12. Recent bank statement or salary certificate to prove the applicant’s ability to fund or support the treatment costs in India
  13. A copy of confirmed return tickets

Steps for filling Online Visa Application Form

  1. Visit https://indianvisaonline.gov.in/visa/index.html to start with the online visa application form and proceed to select the ‘Regular/Paper Visa Application’ option on the page.
  2. Update the required fields on the online form with correct details and options from the drop-down menu, including the country’s name, nationality, Indian Mission, Visa type, expected date of arrival, your date of birth, email ID, and purpose of visit. Follow this by entering the verification captcha code and click on ‘Continue.’
  3. The following 3-page form will require you to fill in relevant information about – 
  • Page 1: Your name, passport details, residential address, family members, and occupation. 
  • Page 2: The type of visa you wish to apply for. For the Medical visa, details related to your medical condition, the hospital in your country, the referred hospital in India, duration of visa, expected date of arrival and departure, and previous visits to India or other countries will be required. 
  • Page 3: Name, address and phone number, and details of reference in India and your home country. If you are traveling to India through Lyfboat’s assistance but are unable to secure a reference in India, use Lyfboat’s address and contact details for the same purpose. In case the complete address doesn’t fit into the given space, try using the shorter version: C-3, Local Shopping Complex, Vasant Vihar – 110057, New Delhi.
  • You can choose to upload your recent photograph while filling the form by clicking on ‘Upload picture’ or attach it to the final hard copy. 
  1. Make sure to click ‘Save and Continue’ after updating each of these 3 pages, or if you wish to complete the form later, click on ‘Save and Exit.’ You can continue with the form by clicking on ‘Complete Partially Filled form‘ on the Indian visa official website. 
  2. Verify the details highlighted in the preview. Then, if required, click ‘Modify/Edit’ to replace possible errors with the correct information.
  3. On successful registration of your application, proceed to select an appointment date to submit a hard copy of your visa application at the Mission Counter.
  4. Selecting ‘Confirm Appointment’ will lead you to a new window where you have the option to print and save your registered application. Click on these options to save your application and print out a copy. 
  5. Add your signature to the space below the photograph and at the bottom of the second page. 
  6. Submit the printed copy along with the documents specified in the checklist at the Mission counter on the appointed date. You can confirm the appointment date mentioned at the right margin of the application and visit the Mission counter during the working hours (09:00 hours – 1200 hours).

Nationals of Ghana are eligible for an e-Visa. Patients looking for short-term medical treatments can avail an e-visa that stays valid for 6 months.

The processing fee for an Indian medical visa from Ghana costs 345 Ghanaian Cedi (USD 77) for six months and 518 Ghanaian Cedi (USD 116) for a year. The High Commission accepts the medical visa processing fee only in cash and in Ghanaian currency.

The processing time for a medical visa from Ghana to India takes 2 to 3 working days, excluding the day of application submission. 

Go to https://indianvisaonline.gov.in/visa/index.html, select ‘Visa Status Inquiry’ and use the Application ID provided on the receipt issued by the Indian Mission to know more about the status of your application. 

Steps to follow after your Arrival in India

FRRO Registration

Foreign Regional Registration Office is responsible for dealing with registration, departure, visa extension, and stay in India for international patients arriving in India seeking medical treatment. 

International patients above 12 years of age must report to the FRRO, either in person or through an authorized representative, within 14 days of arrival in the country. 

To opt for an online registration, click on https://indianfrro.gov.in/frro/ and apply by updating accurate details in the e-form, followed by uploading mandatory documents and your recent photograph. 

Failure in timely registration can lead to a fine of US$ 30/ (Rs.1395).

Note – The Late registration fee is subjected to change from time to time.  

List of documents required for FRRO registration:

  • Original passport and visa
  • Four passport size photographs of the applicant 
  • Passport copy highlighting the applicant’s photo, the validity of issues visa, and arrival stamp of India Immigration
  • Proof of Residence (State-issued driver’s license or at least three months old utility bill)
  • An official letter from the referred hospital/healthcare center in India confirming the duration of the treatment
  • Relevant medical records of the patient

Note – If the applicant is already admitted to the referred hospital, they can submit a medical certificate issued by the hospital to the FRRO. The certificate should contain the applicant’s photograph attested and certified by the doctor responsible for handling the treatment. 

Indian Medical Visa validity and Visa extension

The triple-entry Indian medical visa issued to international patients spans for one year. Therefore, patients and attendants can visit India thrice with the same visa until the validity is over. 

The validity period of the visa is calculated from the date of issue. The patient can choose to visit the country anytime during this period. 

If the patient requires an extended stay in India due to medical reasons like a longer recovery period or additional treatment, they can apply for a visa extension.  

The Visa extension will be approved and granted by the Ministry of Home Affairs on recommendation from State Government/Foreign Regional Registration Office (FRRO). The patient has to submit essential documents stating and confirming the reason for their stay. 

List of documents needed to apply for a medical visa extension

  • Application form for visa extension
  • Original passport and a passport copy
  • Official letter/ medical certificate by referred hospital or healthcare facility declaring the treatment details and need for an additional stay in the country
  • Four passport size photographs of the applicant
  • Proof of residence in India

Note – If the patient is staying at a rented accommodation, they will be required to submit a copy of the lease agreement. On the other hand, if the patient lives with an acquaintance, they can share at least three months old utility bill in the landlord’s name with the application. 

  • A medical certificate with the applicant’s photo attested and certified by the referred doctor (Required only when the patient is admitted to the hospital) 
  • Recent medical reports 
  • Registration certificate or Residential Permit
  • Medical attendant’s visa
