Eligibility criteria for Indian Medical Visa from Nigeria

  • The hospital chosen for treatment must be a government recognized and reputed hospital/healthcare centre located in India.
  • Maximum of two attendants are allowed to accompany the applicant (patient) – they must be blood relatives or close associates of the applicant. A separate Medical Attendant Visa is issued for them.
  • Yellow fever vaccination Certificate & Oral Polio Vaccination Certificate
  • The applicants must have a passport with a validity of at least 6 months and two blank pages (for Indian visa stamp).

Checklist of important documents required for Indian Medical Visa Application

  • Indian visa application form – Printed copy of completely filled Visa Application form with the photo and signature of the applicant, which should match to that on the passport.
  • Original and signed Nigerian passport – at least 6 months of validity. Minimum two blank pages must be available for the Indian visa stamp.
  • Photocopy of the passport ID page clearly showing pictures, date of birth etc.
  • Two recent passport size photographs (2’’ X 2”) of the applicant – with a light background and clear image.
  • Certificate for Yellow fever vaccination and Oral Polio Vaccination (OPV). All except infants below 6 months of age are required to submit these documents.
  • Copy of attendant’s passport with proof of residence and proof of relationship with the patient
  • An official letter of referral (and a copy) from the local hospital/healthcare centre in Nigeria, specifying the nature of ailment of the patient and need for special treatment in India.
  • An official invitation letter from the relevant hospital in India that is to be sent by the hospital authorities to the High Commission at hoc.abuja@mea.gov.in with the contact details, stamp and signature of the hospital authority. The invitation letter  should have the doctor’s name and details of the treatment plan for the patient along with the name and passport number of the patient and the attendant.
  • Copy of Visa invitation letter from hospital/healthcare centre in India.

  • Medical records/documents illustrating the detailed history of patient’s illness. The test reports and imaging scans (CT, MRI, etc) should be included.
  • Proof of residence – utility bills that are more than 3 months old or state issued driver’s license.
  • Proof of availability of funds – certified bank statement for the last three months or guarantee letter from the bank indicating the applicant’s ability to bear the cost of treatment in India and sustain their stay.
  • A letter indicating details of previous travels to India and duration of stay
  • Copy of return Air ticket reservation
  • In case the medical travel is sponsored, an affidavit from the sponsor along with a copy of Identity Card/Passport should also be provided by the applicant.

  • Birth certificate copy of the minor

Steps for filling Online Visa Application Form

  • Go to the official Indian Visa website page by clicking here and select ‘Regular Visa Application’ on this page.
  • A new page will be displayed on the screen. Here, fill the required fields with the correct name of the country you reside in, your nationality, Visa type, purpose of visit, email, Date of birth and expected date of arrival. Then enter the verification captcha code appearing on the page in the box below and then click on ‘Continue’.
  • There are multiple pages in the online medical visa application form. You have to fill in all the required details with relevant information on each page of the application and then select ‘Save and Continue’ or ‘Save and Exit’ at the bottom of these pages. If you choose to exit, then you can fill in your application later by clicking on ‘Complete Partially Filled form‘ on Indian visa official website. 
  • Put in the details regarding your personal information like Name (as in Passport), National ID number, religion, educational qualification and then in the next section provide your passport details. Click on ‘Save and Continue’ to proceed. 
  • On the next page, fill in your address, family details and information related to your profession in correct sections and then click ‘Save and Continue’ at the bottom. 
  • A new page will appear, fill in information about the Visa type (Medical visa), referral hospital in your country and the concerned hospital details in India. 
  • Fill in the information about the nature of your medical condition, duration of visa required, along with expected arrival and exit dates and the port of entry. Then proceed to fill in the details for your previous/current visa, countries you have visited in the past and SAARC country visit details. 
  • In the last section, provide the details of your reference contact in India as well as in your own country.

  • Upload your picture while filling the online application form or you can paste it on the printed copy of the form.
  • Check all your details in the preview, which appears after clicking on continue on the third page. If you find any errors in the information you provided, you can click on Modify/Edit to make necessary changes and when everything is correct, click on ‘Verified and Continue’.
  • Your application will be registered and submitted. 
  • A new window will appear again where you can select an appointment date for submission of hard copy of your visa application at the Mission Counter as per your convenience.
  • Click on Confirm Appointment. Two options will be displayed on a new window – Print or Save.
  • Click on the ‘Save’ first and then select ‘Print Registered Application’ (on the home page) to obtain a printed copy of the filled visa application form.
  • Put your signature in the given box, just below the photograph, and in the box at the bottom of the second page.
  • Submit a printed copy of online visa application form along with the mandatory documents mentioned above, at the Mission counter on the appointed date during the working hours of the working days.

Medical Visa processing fee for Nigerians travelling to India is USD 250 along with a surcharge of USD 2. The medical visa cost is payable at the time of submission of Indian Visa Application form and other documents.

Processing Time for Medical Visa from Nigeria to India

Usually, Medical visa processing takes around 2-3 working days after the submission of the application. Track your visa status by clicking on Visa Status Enquiry on the homepage of the official website https://indianvisaonline.gov.in/visa/index.html

For this, you have to fill in the Application ID that is provided on the receipt issued by Indian Mission/ Agent after submission of your application at the Mission counter.

FRRO Registration

It is mandatory for all foreign nationals visiting India on Medical/Medical Attendant visa (validity of more than 6 months) to register at Foreign Regional Registration Office (FRRO)/ Foreign Registration Office (FRO) within 14 days of arrival into the country.

One has to report in person or through an authorized representative for registration at the concerned Registration Officer. Minors above 16 years of age are also required to register.

You can apply for online registration on the official government website https://indianfrro.gov.in/eservices/home.jsp, and upload the necessary documents and photographs online.

Late registration is penalized and one has to pay Indian currency equivalent to US$ 30/ (Rs.1395). This fee can be revised from time to time.

Documents that are required for registration:

  • Original passport and visa
  • 4 passport size photographs
  • Copies of important pages of passport including the pages bearing the photo, validity, arrival stamp of India Immigration
  • Copies of undertaking letter signed by the Indian host/ sponsor/ guarantor along with their identification proof (passport/PAN card/official identification card).
  • Copies of residence proof (such as utility bills including electricity bill/telephone bill/municipal bill)
  • An official letter from the concerned hospital where the applicant will be taking the treatment and relevant medical reports mentioning the duration of treatment. (If the applicant is already admitted in the hospital, then the medical certificate containing applicant’s photo attested and certified by the doctor is also required.)

Indian Medical Visa validity and Visa extension

Indian Medical Visa is issued for one year, and is a triple-entry visa. This means that Visa holder is allowed to enter India with the same visa for a total of 3 times during the period of validity.

The validity of the Medical attendant visa is for the same duration. The visa validity period is counted from the date of issue, and not from the date of entry into the country.

You can apply for a visa extension in case the treatment and recovery is taking more time than initially planned. For visa extension, you have to submit certain documents at the State Government/Foreign Regional Registration Office (FRRO), and they may recommend it to Ministry of Home Affairs where the extension is granted.

  • Official letter/ medical certificate from concerned medical authority stating the treatment details and duration of stay in the country for recovery.

  • Proof of residence in India – copy of lease agreement in case of rented accommodation or copy of utility bills of the landlord if you are staying at a friend’s place.
  • If the applicant is admitted in the hospital, the medical certificate with applicant’s photo attested and certified by the concerned doctor is required.
