Eligibility criteria for Indian Medical Visa from Kenya

Conditions that must be met by an Kenya passport holder to obtain a Medical visa are:

  • Medical visa is granted to patients who are travelling to India for a specified medical treatment at a recognized hospital. 
  • Certain treatments are of primary consideration for issuing medical visa, including –  Cardiac surgery, Neurosurgery, treatment of kidney disorders, Organ transplantation, Joint replacement procedures, congenital disorders, and Cancer Therapy etc. 
  • The applicant (patient) should be seeking treatment at a hospital/healthcare/medical facility that is located in  India and recognized/reputed by the government.
  • Up to two companions/attendants are allowed to travel with the patient on separate Medical Attendant Visa. The attendants should be a blood relatives or close associates of the patient.
  • Yellow fever vaccination and oral Polio vaccination Certificate is a mandatory document for people travelling from specific countries.

Documents required to be submitted for Indian Medical Visa Application

  • The hard copy of the completely filled Indian Visa Application form with the photograph and signature (matching the signature on passport) of the applicant.
  • Original passport with minimum 6 months validity and two blank pages for Indian visa stamp.
  • Two recent color photographs of passport size
  • Photocopy of the passport important pages clearly 
  • Yellow fever vaccination certificate must be carried by Kenya nationals travelling to India along with a photocopy. This certificate should be taken minimum 10 days through a Government approved medical clinic/hospital and has to be carried along with other immigration documents.
  • The Oral Polio Vaccination certificate – taken at least 4 weeks before traveling to India – has to be carried with other immigration documents.
  • National ID card (original and photocopy)
  • Proof of permanent residence of the applicant
  • An official referral letter from the local doctor/hospital in Kenya, stating the nature of illness and recommending special treatment in India.
  • An official visa invitation/assistance letter from a government recognized Indian hospital. The letter should clearly state the name, contact details and passport number of the patient and attendant, and the details regarding the treatment – nature of illness, duration of treatment, etc.
  • Copy of the attendant’s passport and their proof of relationship with the patient.
  • Medical record of the patient, including all the relevant test reports and imaging scans like CT, MRI, etc.
  • Proof of sufficiency of funds establishing the applicant’s ability to fund the expense of the treatment and their stay in India. This can include: Bank statement (past six months), salary certificate, sponsorship/insurance letter etc.

List of Important documents that are required by Minors while applying:

  • Birth certificate of the minor
  • Photocopy of passports of both parents
  • Notarized authorization and Visa application signed by both parents

Steps for filling Online Visa Application Form

  • Start your application by visiting Indian visa official website and click on ‘Regular Visa Application’ on the webpage.
  • Fill in the relevant field on the page by accurately selecting the country name, nationality, Indian Mission, Visa type (Medical/Medical Attendant visa) and the purpose of visit (Medical Treatment of Self / Medical Attendant to Patient). Provide your email ID, Date of birth and other details and then put in the verification code. Click ‘Continue’ to proceed with the application. 
  • There are three main pages of the online visa application and after completing each page, you can either click on ‘Save and Continue’ to continue with the application or choose ‘Save and exit’ to leave the application and continue later. Note your Temporary Application ID before choosing Save and Exit. You can continue filling the application by clicking on ‘Partially Filled application’ and using temporary application ID and your date of birth. 
  • On the first page, fill in the information under the sections for Personal details, Passport details, family details and your occupation details. After completing the page, click on ‘Save and Continue’
  • Then on the next page, provide information for the section for Visa Details -the type of visa – Medical/Medical Attendant visa and details of your medical condition, the details of referring hospital in the home country and the details of concerned hospital in India. Then put in the details of the duration of visa, the purpose of your visit, expected date of arrival and departure, previous visits to India and other countries.
  • In the next section, provide contact details of your reference in India – name, address and phone number, and the details of reference contact in your home country.
  • If you do not have a reference contact in India and are travelling through Lyfboat services, we will be happy to assist. Contact us or use Lyfboat’s address and phone number as your reference in India while filling the application.

  • Then on the new window upload your recent passport size photo by clicking on the “Upload Photo” and choosing the appropriate file. Or you can paste it on the printed copy of the application form.
  • After completely filling the third page, click on ‘Save and Continue’ and a new window with a preview of your application will appear. On this page, check the details that you have filled in. If you need to correct or change any detail, click on Modify/Edit to edit or click on ‘Verified and Continue’ if all the information on the screen appears to be accurate.
  • The application is then submitted and registration is complete. You can now select an appointment date that is suitable to you for submission of the hard copy of your visa application at the designated Indian Mission.
  • After selecting the date click on ‘Confirm Appointment’. Another window will open up having two options – Print or Save. Click on the Save option to preserve your filled application form and not on ‘Print” as you might lose the application by doing so. Go to the home page and select ‘Print Registered Application’ there to take out the print of your visa application.
  • Put your signature on the printed application – one in the box below the photograph and another in the box at the bottom of the second page.
  • Finally, submit a hardcopy of the completed online visa application form along with the mandatory documents at the Mission counter on the appointed date (mentioned on the right margin of your application) between 0900 hrs to 1100 hrs.

Nationals of Kenya can apply for e-Visa. The Medical e-Visa is issued with a validity of 6 months and triple entries are allowed in the validity period.

Steps for filling e-Visa application

Visit https://indianvisaonline.gov.in/evisa/ and start your application by –

  • Fill in the details for the required fields appearing on the screen. From the options, click on the correct name of the country (Kenya), your nationality, the Indian Mission and Visa type you wish to apply for. Then fill in other information like the expected date of your arrival in India, your date of birth, correct email ID, etc. Then enter the verification code and click ‘Continue’.
  • The e-Visa application pages are similar to online visa application pages. Fill the details under each section of the page before clicking on ‘Save and Continue’ and proceeding to the next page. 
  • In the section for reference in India, you can put Lyfboat contact details, if you are travelling through Lyfboat services and do not already have a reference contact for India. You can use the shorter version of the address if the complete one doesn’t fit the space provided –

If you do not have your digital photo under the specified size limit and of correct dimensions (jpeg format with 10 Kb to 300 Kb of size), you can resize by clicking  here or send us an email at care@lyfboat.com with your photograph if you are using Lyfboat services and we will assist you. 
  • Then upload the required documents and click on ‘Confirm’.
  • A preview of your application form will be displayed on a new page. Here, check all the details you have provided and then click on ‘Verified and Continue’ if you are satisfied. If not, then select ‘Modify’ to make changes. 
  • Next is Onlive Visa Fee Payment. You can choose to pay right then by clicking on ‘Yes’ option for the Undertaking and then selecting ‘Pay now’. If you are not ready to pay at that time, you can choose ‘Pay Later’ to complete payment after some time. Whenever you are ready to make your payment, click on ‘Verify Payment/ Pay e-Visa fee’ on https://indianvisaonline.gov.in/evisa/ and use your Application ID and Date of Birth to access the portal. 

Note: Visa application is not submitted till the fee payment is made and it should be done 4 days before your journey.

  • You will receive an email from Govt. of India regarding your e-visa application. To print your visa application form, select the option on Indian eVisa website.

The fee for Indian Medical Visa from Kenya that is valid for 6 months (Single/multiple entry) is USD 80 (KES 8300) and for visa validity of upto 1 year (single/multiple entries) the fee is USD 120 (KES 12400). Medical attendant visa fee is also the same.

Processing Time for Medical Visa from Kenya to India

Indian Medical visa from Kenya is usually issued within 3 working days after the day of submission of application. 

To track your visa status, go to the homepage of the official website https://indianvisaonline.gov.in/visa/index.html and click on ‘Visa Status Enquiry’

Fill in the Application ID provided on the receipt issued by Indian Mission/ Agent after submission of your application at the Mission counter.

After arriving in India

FRRO Registration

Foreign nationals visiting India are required to register themselves at the regulatory body – Foreign Regional Registration Office (FRRO)/ Foreign Registration Office (FRO) within 14 days of their arrival into the country. 

This is applicable to all foreigners that are above 16 years of age. You can register by reporting for registration yourself or through an authorized representative at the Foreign Registration Office.

Online registration can also be done – visit the official government website https://indianfrro.gov.in/frro/ and fill in the registration form and make payment. You have to upload the required documents and your recent photograph while applying online. 

Fine for late registration is US$ 30/ (This fee might get revised over time)

Documents that are required for registration:

  • Original and photocopy of the passport 
  • Original and photocopy of the visa
  • Applicant’s four recent passport size photographs 
  • Residence Proof
  • Official letter from the concerned Indian hospital where the patient is seeking treatment along with the relevant medical documents and duration of expected stay. If the applicant is already admitted at the hospital, then a medical certificate consisting of applicant’s attested photo and a certificate from the doctor must be submitted.

Indian Medical Visa validity and Visa extension

The Indian Medical Visa is issued by the government for a period of six months, one year or for the duration of treatment – whichever is more. Visa holder may be allowed single, tripe or multiple entry on the visa during the validity period. The visa validity is observed from the date of issue of the visa and not from the date of arrival into the country.

You can apply for the extension of visa validity in case the treatment and recovery is taking more than expected time. For this, submit the visa extension application along with the required documents to the State Government/Foreign Regional Registration Office (FRRO). The extension is finally granted by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).

List of documents needed to apply for a medical visa extension

  • Visa extension application form
  • Original and photocopy of the passport 
  • Official letter and medical certificate from the medical authority stating the treatment details and duration of stay in the country for recovery.
  • 4 passport size photographs of the applicant 
  • Proof of residence in India 
  • If the applicant is still admitted in the hospital, then a medical certificate with attested photo of the applicant along with the certification by the concerned doctor has to be submitted.
