Types of Spine Surgeries

Although there is little evidence to showcase which procedures work best for their particular indications, there isn’t any specific set of rules.

It completely depends o the expertise and experience of the surgeon/doctor to analyze case specifications to decide the course of action and the kind of surgery.

However, some of the surgical procedures that are performed may include names like:

• Spinal decompression surgeries such as diskectomy, laminectomy, and foraminotomy help in conditions where spaces between the vertebrae and spinal cord get narrowed. part or all of one or more vertebrae are cut away to relieve pressure on the spinal cord and the nerves that branch out of it.
• Spinal fusion surgery is used to treat spinal instability and pain caused by vertebrae rubbing together. It is a procedure in which two or more vertebrae are permanently connected in the spine. Metal plates, rods, or screws are used to help secure the vertebrae together.

It is performed due to many conditions like spondylosis, spinal disc herniation, discogenic pain, degenerative disc disease, scoliosis, spinal tumor removal, vertebral fracture and kyphosis.

• Vertebral augmentation surgery such as vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty, is a procedure to treat compression fractures in the vertebrae. During vertebral augmentation surgery, a surgeon uses a special cement to repair the fracture in the bone.
• These fractures are often triggered by osteoporosis, which often leads to pain in the back and mobility issues.

Spine surgery has different procedures and a different name for each procedure. The commonly used names for surgeries may differ from country to country.
