What happens during stapedectomy?

The extra deposition of calcium over the bone is usually visible and the stapes bone is tested for vibrating movement.

The stapes bone is then separated from the incus and the malleus. Both the incus and the malleus bones move on pressing after the removal of the stapes bone. Then the tendon and arch of the stapes bone are vaporized with the help of a micro instrument or laser. The stapes bone is then removed from the middle ear.

The aperture between the middle ear and the inner ear is opened. It also serves as a platform for the stapes bone. The ear surgeon then directs the laser at the aperture and a minuscule opening of approximately 0.6 mm is made.
After the opening is made, prosthetic stapes bone is inserted gently and assembled onto the incus bone. The prosthetic stapes bone is clipped with the incus bone and the vibration is checked.

Tissue from the posterior part of the ear lobe is taken to seal the aperture and space around the prosthetic stapes bone. Finally, the eardrum is positioned back to its original location and fixed with the help of small gelatin sponge.
The whole surgical procedure usually takes around 45 to 90 minutes. Stapedectomy is performed as an outpatient procedure. Some patients may, however, require an overnight stay at the hospital.
