Uterus transplant in India

Giving birth is a monumental moment for many women. Unfortunately, not every woman is able to cherish this time in their life.

Statistically speaking, 1 in every 500 women suffers from AUFI or the Absolute uterine factor infertility. This condition indicates the presence of a diseased uterus or the absence of one. While women born without a uterus have no chance to get pregnant, others with a diseased uterus face problems with normal embryonic implantation. These reasons prevent a female from getting pregnant at all. Therefore, no form of medication or infertility treatment can be a good help.

Thanks to the advancements in medicine and healthcare, scientists and medical professionals have invented a method that gives women a fair chance at motherhood; Uterus transplant.

What is a Uterus transplant?

  • A uterus transplant is a comparatively newer treatment option and, therefore, not very common.
  • The procedure involves replacing a diseased uterus with a healthy uterus from a genetically compatible donor. It is also a great option for women who are born without a uterus and wish to embrace parenthood.
  • A uterus transplant, unlike others, is a temporary procedure devised to aid pregnancy. This means that a patient will receive the transplanted uterus, have a successful pregnancy, and then undergo a hysterectomy

What is the procedure to undergo a uterus transplant in India?

1. Before the surgery

  • The patient will undergo a comprehensive evaluation to check their eligibility for the transplant surgery. These will include a series of diagnostic and screening tests for the physical and psychological health status of the patient.
  • If the patient is a fit for the procedure, the next step will be to collect the female or donor egg and a sperm sample from the male partner or donor.
  • These eggs will be fertilized with sperm under suitable lab conditions to create healthy embryos.
  • Meanwhile, the uterus donor will also undergo a list of tests to evaluate their eligibility for donation.

2. During the surgery

  • The transplant surgery starts with the donor undergoing a hysterectomy. It is usually an 8-hour-long procedure and can be conducted through:
  1. Robotic hysterectomy – Also known as laparoscopic hysterectomy, the technique involves the surgeon removing the donor’s uterus through five small incisions.
  2. Open hysterectomy – The surgeon removes the uterus by making a long vertical incision starting from the belly button to the pubic hairline.
  • Next, the patient will visit the hospital on the scheduled date of the surgery. The transplant surgery will take place for about 4 to 6 hours and be performed under general anesthesia.
  • The patient will be transferred to the ICU and then a recovery ward for at least 5 to 7 days post-surgery.

3. After the surgery

  • The recovery period for a uterus transplant lasts for at least 3 months.
  • The patient will stay on immunosuppressive drugs until a successful pregnancy and hysterectomy.
  • The patient can expect the onset of menstruation after 4 to 6 weeks of the surgery.
  • The fertilized egg (embryo) stored under suitable lab conditions will then be transferred to the patient’s womb or the uterus.
  • Once the embryo is implanted into the uterine wall, the patient will be advised to rest and show compliance with all the necessary dos and don’ts.
  • If the pregnancy is successful, the patient will deliver a baby after the end of the gestation period through a C-section.
  • Patients can undergo a hysterectomy along the C-section or wait if they wish to have more children in the future.
