Varicose Vein Treatment Options in India

Initially, the patient is recommended to follow the conservative methods to control the extension of the disease, if the condition is not severe. These include the use of compression stockings, exercising, and leg elevation. If these methods do not work well, the patient is advised to opt for any of the surgical treatment options.

Conservative Treatment Methods

These conservative methods are used to manage the symptoms of varicose veins:

• Keeping the leg in an elevated position.
• Use compression stockings that fit well around the legs.
• Using intermittent pneumatic compression devices.
• Medicines such as anti-inflammatory drugs and flavonoids.
• Applying topical gels to control the symptoms.

Active Treatment Methods

• Open Surgery: The patient is given spinal or general anesthesia prior to the surgical procedure. The surgeon makes a number of cuts from the groin region to the ankle. Underlying diseased veins are located after dissecting the leg. The strippers are passed through these veins and then the stripper is pulled out along with the diseased veins.
• Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA): A local anesthesia is given to the patient before the surgery to numb the area. No incision is required to perform this procedure. A small entry point in the skin is used to introduce a thin fiber into the damaged vein.

  The fiber emits energy through the laser light when it is pulled back through the vein. The tissues which were targeted react with the light energy with extreme precision without affecting the neighbor tissues. It causes the damaged vein to seal shut. As these veins are superficial and carry only a small amount of blood, the restricted blood flow to these veins is adjusted to the other healthier veins.

• Radio Frequency Ablation: It is also a minimally invasive technique used to treat varicose veins. The surgeon inserts a radiofrequency catheter inside the damaged vein with the help of an ultrasound. The veins are treated with radio energy that causes the affected veins to close. The blood running towards these veins will automatically shift to the other healthy and normal veins. Recurrence rates of the varicose veins are lower than the open surgical procedure but more than EVL ablation.
• Sclerotherapy: It is a non-surgical procedure used to treat varicose and spider veins in the legs. A sclerosant is introduced into the diseased veins to make them shrink. With due course of time, this sclerosant solution disappears from the body.

  However, some patients may need sclerosant to be re-injected more than once. This technique is successful only if it is done correctly. The recurrence rate after this method is quite high as compared to other procedures.
