About Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography

Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is a technique used to view the ducts of the gallbladder, pancreas, and the liver. It is usually for patients experiencing problems such as gallstones, pancreatitis, or any diseases related to these organs. In this test, the doctor inserts an endoscope (tube with light and/or camera) down the patient's throat until it reaches the small intestine and then uses X-rays to view the organs in consideration. Besides viewing the ducts, the doctor may also perform some small procedures such as taking out gallstones or taking tissue samples.
