About Electrophysiology Study & Radio Frequency Ablation

EPS and RFA stand for Electrophysiology Study and Radio-Frequency Ablation. Cardiac electrophysiology studies (EPS) are used to test heart rhythms in the case of arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat). The doctor will use catheters to send electric pulses to patient's heart, and then record the signals produced by the heart in a process called cardiac mapping. These tests can help detect the source of the arrhythmia, how to treat the arrhythmia, and what medical devices might work best for each situation. If the doctor finds the source of the arrhythmia, he or she can use RFA to treat the problem. Radio-frequency ablation (RFA) destroys any heart tissue causing irregular beats or disturbances using electrical energy to target the tissue. For this procedure, a special RFA catheter is inserted and used to burn the abnormal tissue.
