About Laryngoscopy

Laryngoscopy is a procedure that allows doctors to examine the larynx (also known as the voicebox) of the patient. This examination might be done to search for the causes of problems ranging from throat injuries to voice problems. This examination might also be done indirectly, using a mirror or similar device to view the larynx and the back of the throat, or directly. In the direct procedure, known as direct laryngoscopy, the doctor will use a flexible or rigid scope to view the larynx and the back of the throat. If the scope is flexible, the patient is generally kept awake. If the scope is rigid, the patient is usually put under general anesthesia.
