About Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass

Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is a type of bariatric surgery that involves reducing the size of the stomach as well as bypassing the upper part of the small intestine in order to decrease food intake and nutrient absorption, thus producing weight loss. The surgery can be performed laparoscopically. The stomach is divided into a small upper pouch and another lower portion (that food cannot enter). This upper portion of the stomach is then connected directly to the middle portion of the small intestine. Therefore, food enters the small pouch and travels directly to the middle part of the small intestine, bypassing the lower portion of the stomach and the upper portion of the small intestine.
