About Splenectomy

Splenectomy is a surgical procedure in which the spleen is removed from the body of the patient. This procedure is generally performed for patients that have enlarged spleens, ruptured spleens, or certain cancers. In laparoscopic splenectomy, the surgeon makes small incisions in the abdomen to guide small cameras, instruments, and devices into the body in order to view and operate on the spleen. The surgeon can then perform the removal in a minimally-invasive manner. In some cases, such as that of the ruptured spleen, the doctor might perform open surgery, and make a large incision in the abdominal area to directly access the spleen. In partial splenectomy, only part of the spleen is removed.
