About Thoracentesis

Thoracentesis is a procedure in which fluid is removed from between the patient's lungs and the chest wall. This procedure can be performed to test the fluid in the space and/or remove fluid buildup. In this procedure, the patient is given a local anesthetic. The doctor will then insert a needle into the chest wall, draw fluid out of the region, and then send the fluid to the laboratory for testing.
