About Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusion (TLIF)

TLIF is a spinal fusion surgical technique which aims to stabilize the spinal vertebra column and the intervertebral disc (the shock absorbing bone discs that are present between the vertebra). The transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF) fusion technique involves fusing the solid bone between the adjoining vertebra, thereby eliminating any movement between these bones. The goal of the technique is to reduce symptoms such as back pain, spinal compression and nerve irritation. The procedure is usually recommended for spinal conditions such as degenerative disc disease spondylolisthesis, and recurrent disc herniations. The advantage of this technique is that it is a minimally invasive method, which means the patient may have faster recovery, less postoperative pain and complications.
