What is a Heart Transplant?

A heart transplant, also called a cardiac transplant, is the processes of replacing a person’s diseased or damaged heart with a healthy heart from a donor.  Heart transplantation has become an increasingly common choice for patients that have end stage heart disease or who have severe symptoms, associated with heart failure, that are not responding to other treatment methods.

Who is eligible for a Heart Transplant?

There are two reasons that a heart transplant may be considered as an option.  The first is to increase the survivability of the patient and the second is to improve the quality of life of the patient.  Some of the situations that may lead a doctor to consider a heart transplant as an option include:

  • Repeatedly low blood oxygen levels.
  • Frequent hospitalization for cardiac failure.
  • Medication levels that are become unmanageable due to the types of medications needed, the complexity of the medications or the dosage that is required.
  • The need for an artificial heart of ventricular assist device.

The availability of donor organs is limited and even when a heart becomes available there is no guarantee that the donor and the patient will be a viable match.  For this reason, medical professionals carefully consider several criteria before recommending heart transplantation.  The process of determining how well a patient will do following a heart transplant is the most significant part of the selection process.  The medical team will classify the patients risk of death, if they do not receive a transplant, has high, medium or low.  The information gathered and the medical team’s recommendations and opinions are then forwarded to a cardiac transplant center for final determination. Some of the conditions that can eliminate a patient from consideration for a donor heart are:

  • Irreversible high blood pressure (hypertension)
  • Cancer
  • Infection
  • Advanced liver or kidney failure

To guarantee that donated organs, including hearts, are fairly distributed, the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) has created a system of rules that are strictly followed.  When assigning who a newly available donor heart to a recipient they consider criteria such as:

  • How severe the illness is.
  • How long a patient has been on the waiting list.
  • Distance between the donor hospital and the transplant center.

How Long Does It Take To Recover From A Heart Transplant?

The length of time that a patient takes to recover after a heart transplant depends on a number of factors including the age of the patients and adherence to the instructions of the medical team. Most patients are fully recovered between three and six months following surgery.

Following a heart transplant the patient will be prescribed multiple medications that they will remain on for the rest of their life.  The most important medication that will be prescribed is an immunosuppressant with will prevent your body from rejecting the new heart.  Other medications will be prescribed to maintain a health blood pressure and cholesterol, and to prevent infections.  Certain supplements and vitamins may also be recommended to ensure the patient’s body is getting what it needs.

Will I still be able to engage in physical activity?

For the first three months following the heart transplant the patient should limit activity that is overly strenuous such as lifting a lot of weight or exercising aggressively.  Following this recovery, the patient can slowly increase their level of activity. As a general rule, the patient should listen to their body and build up their strength and endurance over time.  The patient should discuss an appropriate physical activity recovery plan with their medical professional.

Can I have sex after a heart transplant?

Returning to a normal sex life following a heart transplant is not only possible but expected.  Patients should avoid positions that put pressure on the wound site for at least three months.  When resuming sexual activity patients should watch for any signs of abnormal pain, numbness or dizziness.  If these symptoms occur the patient should contact their doctor for a check-up.  Practicing safe sex is extremely important following a heart transplant since the anti-rejection medications will lower the patient’s immune system and increase the risk of infections.
