What is VSD?
VSD closure, abbreviated as ventricular septal defect closure is recommended to patients with an abnormal opening in the septum that divides the two lower chambers (ventricles) of the heart. This results in mixing of the pure and impure blood in contained in the two ventricles, which is otherwise prevented by complete septa. VSD is a congenital disorder that occurs during heart development of the fetus, while it is still inside the womb of the mother. It occurs during the first eight weeks of gestation.
VSD closure surgery corrects the congenital defect by closing the opening between the two ventricles with the help of a patch, which is sewn over the opening. The surgery is performed on the child patient after placing him or her on a heart-lung bypass machine.
