What happens during lumbar disc replacement?
Before the actual lumbar disc replacement procedure, the patient is given general anesthesia. During the surgery, the artificial disc is installed after removing the diseased disc from its place. The surgeon makes a deep incision of around 7 to 10 centimeters in the abdominal area to separate the anterior abdominal muscles. The abdominal organs in the peritoneal sack are placed aside. Then, an X-ray is used to confirm the disc replacement level and a marker is placed at the site. The disc is exposed after moving the large blood vessels carefully present in front of the spine.
