Bariatric surgery that involves inserting an inflatable band around the upper portion of the stomach to restrict food intake, and thus promote weight-loss. When the band is inflated, it restricts movement of food from the upper part of the stomach to the lower part, which limits the amount of food the patient can eat in one sitting. The tightness of the band can be adjusted as needed. The surgery is minimally invasive and reversible. In some countries such as the U.S., only patients that are morbidly obese, or that have other pre-existing conditions, can undergo this procedure.
