Iridectomy, also known as a corectomy, is a surgical procedure in which part of the iris (the colored part of the eye) is removed. This surgery is generally used to treat patients that have melanoma (cancer) of the iris, cataracts, or certain kinds of glaucoma. Iridectomy can be performed traditionally or with lasers. In the traditional surgery, the surgeon will make an incision in the cornea, access the iris, and remove part of it. In laser iridectomy, the laser cuts out a part of the iris.
