Gastrectomy is a procedure in which part or all of the stomach is removed. This procedure might be done in patients that have stomach cancer. In some cases, variations of the surgery can be performed on patients with stomach ulcers or tumors, or those who are morbidly obese. In partial gastrectomy, the surgeon makes an incision in the abdomen to remove part of the stomach. In total gastrectomy, after making the incision, the entire stomach will be removed, and the esophagus will be connected to the duodenum of the small intestine.
