In other situations, open-heart surgery and catheter procedures can be used to close the hole. In the case of the catheter procedure, a catheter is inserted, guided to the heart, and used to insert a plug or coil to close the hole. In the case of open-heart surgery, the surgeon makes an incision between the ribs to access the heart. The PDA then is closed using stitches or clips.
