What happens after Discectomy Surgery?

Following the surgery, you will be brought to a postoperative recovery room.  Your vital signs (heart rate, blood pressure, respiration) will be continuously monitored.  You will be moved to a room once you wake up and will slowly increase your level of activity to sitting, standing and then walking.  In general, patients return home the same day.  Occasionally, a patient will be asked to stay in the hospital for a day or two for monitoring.   You will be sent home with some instructions for your recovery period such as:

Pain or Discomfort:

• Your medical professional will suggest either over-the-counter medication or prescription medication that will manage any pain or discomfort during your recovery.   Be sure to take all medications according to directions.
• Applying ice to the incision site for about fifteen minutes three times a day can reduce swelling and alleviate pain.

Restrictions – First Two Weeks:

• Avoid twisting, lifting and bending for two weeks following surgery.
• Avoid lifting weight of five pounds or greater.
• Avoid activities that are physically strenuous (housework, yard work, etc…)
• Avoid sexual activity.
• Avoid driving unless otherwise instructed by your doctor.
• Avoid smoking and drinking, both can inhibit the growth of new bone and slow the healing process.

Daily Activities:

• Plan to have someone assist you with your daily activities for a few days following surgery:
• Be sure to take a five or ten-minute walk every few hours gradually increasing your time to build up your strength and endurance.

Bathing & Wound Care:

• Prevent infection by cleaning your hands are clean before cleaning your incision site.
• You can take a regular shower two days after surgery.  Remove the dressing over your incision and wash the incision site gently with soap and water.  Redress the incision site.
• Avoid taking a bath, swimming or soaking until the incision is healed.
• Do not use ointments, lotions or perfumed products on or near the incision.
• Stitches or staples will be removed by your doctor at a follow-up visit.

When to worry (Call the doctor if…)

• If you develop a temperature higher than 101 degrees.
• If there is redness, swelling, pain or drainage at the incision site (these are signs of an infection.
• If there is numbness or tingling in the back or one or both legs, or the groin.
• If there is pain or swelling in one or both legs.
