Plastic surgery includes a wide spectrum of procedures that aim to improve the appearance of the face and body parts. Although most believe that plastic surgery means cosmetic procedures only, it encompasses reconstructive surgeries also.

These procedures improve the appearance as well as the function of the part being treated. Plastic surgery can be used to correct deformities, including birth defects such as cleft lip, as well as those caused by trauma or injury. Plastic surgery has been practiced for ages.

Modern medicine has greatly improved surgical techniques and outcomes. Various new innovative surgical techniques have been introduced over the past decades to help people achieve enhanced aesthetics through plastic surgery.

Men and women of all ages undergo one or the other kind of plastic or cosmetic surgery. The aesthetic improvements with a cosmetic procedure have been linked to boosting a person’s self-confidence and self-esteem.

The surgeon discusses the desired outcomes during the consultation and designs a treatment plan based on it. A plastic surgery candidate also undergoes careful medical assessment to determine their suitability for a particular procedure or technique, as some plastic surgery are more intensive and invasive.

One of the most important things to keep in mind while opting for plastic or cosmetic surgery patients is to have realistic expectations from the procedure and understand what can be achieved by the procedure and its limitations.

Types of plastic surgery

Breast reconstruction

Breast reconstruction surgery aims to restore the normal shape, size, symmetry and appearance of one or both breasts. This is usually done after a breast removal surgery such as mastectomy and lumpectomy for breast cancer treatment, or congenital deformities.

This procedure may involve multiple stages and some women may opt to start with reconstruction at the time of mastectomy only, but it can be delayed to a later date as well. It can be performed with breast implant reconstruction or flap reconstruction.

With a breast implant, the patient can choose the type, shape and texture of the breasts, as different types of implants are available, including saline or silicone gel-filled. Flap reconstruction is an autologous procedure as it involves the use of the patient’s own tissue, taken from another part of the body, to form a new breast.

Septoplasty

Septoplasty is a nose surgery that enables the surgeon to correct a deviated nasal septum, the wall that divides bone and cartilage between the two nostrils. This problem usually develops when the septum shifts towards one side of the nasal cavity and causes obstruction in the nasal passage. It results in breathing issues and reduced airflow to the lungs.

In the septoplasty surgery, the surgeon straightening the deviation in the septum and repositions the middle of the nose. It may also involve the removal of parts of the septum, and then putting them back into the correction position. A septoplasty can also be combined with rhinoplasty but is also performed individually.

Cleft lip and cleft palate

Cleft lip and cleft palate are two of the most common birth defects in infants. These deformities are caused due to incomplete formation of the upper lip, resulting in a cleft on the lip or roof of the mouth (palate). These defects may occur individually or together in a child.

The severity of the defect may vary and involve one or both sides of the mouth. Surgical repair is suggested for correction of the cleft lip and/or cleft palate. The surgery aims to improve the appearance and restore the function of the lips and mouth so that the child can look and eat normally.

The doctor may use specialized techniques to treat the defect and improve the child’s quality of life, as it improves the ability to eat, speak, hear and breathe.

Hand surgery

Hand surgery can help correct or treat impaired hands. This is a specialized form of surgery that aims to improve the conditions and diseases that cause pain and impairment of the strength, function and flexibility of the wrist and fingers. It also restores normal functions of fingers and hand injured due to trauma or birth defect. Hand surgery can be used for certain conditions, including:

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome: It is a condition that affects the median nerve lying within the wrist or carpal tunnel. The symptoms include pain, a tingling sensation, weakness, ache, or numbness of the fingers. The syndrome is also associated with other conditions such as an injury due to repetitive motion or overuse, injury to the nerve in the carpal tunnel, fluid retention during pregnancy and even rheumatoid arthritis.
  • Rheumatoid arthritis: A disabling disease that causes severe inflammation and pain in a joint of the body. It may also lead to deformation of fingers of the hand, pain and impaired movement.
  • Dupuytren’s contracture: A disabling disorder of the hand caused by the formation of thick, scar-like tissue bands in the palm. It may also extend into the fingers and can result in restriction of movement, bending of the fingers into an abnormal position.

Microsurgery

Reconstructive microsurgery is a procedure in which the surgeon uses specialized operating microscopes and precision instrumentation for the operation. It involves the repair of intricate structures of the parts, including blood vessels and nerves less than a few millimeters in diameter.

This type of surgery has significantly helped in the restoration of the form and function of body parts impaired by trauma, cancer and congenital anomalies.

Types of cosmetic surgery

Facelift: Facelift surgery or rhytidectomy involves lifting the facial tissues and skin to get rid of the sagging and wrinkles on the face. It aims to restore a more youthful facial appearance and firmness.

The surgeon removes excess sagging skin, and smoothens the deep folds, followed by lifting and tightening the deep facial tissues. Mini-Facelift is a less invasive procedure preferred by many patients who have a mild degree of jowling and sagging skin.

Eyelid lift: Also known as blepharoplasty, it aims to restore the natural youthful appearance of the eyes. The surgeon reduces the sagging skin around the eyelids, smoothens the wrinkles and reduces puffiness, to achieve firmness and reverses the signs of aging in the upper and lower eyelids.

Other than cosmetic reasons, a person may choose to have eyelid surgery for medical reasons, such as obstruction of vision due to sagging eyelid. It can be combined with other procedures such as facelift, brow lift, or both to achieve more comprehensive results for their appearance.

Rhinoplasty: Popularly known as nose job or nose reshaping surgery, it is a surgical procedure that aims to improve the shape, size, and symmetry of the nose. The doctor may create a better proportion for the nose, and it can be customized for the patients as per their desire and reasons for having a rhinoplasty.

The nasal structures, including bone, cartilage, and skin, are reshaped. It can target various needs – straighten the crooked nose, smoothen a bump in the bridge of the nose, refine a bulbous nasal tip, reduce the length of the nasal tip, or narrow a too-wide nose to make it proportionate to the face.

Chin enhancement: Chin implant surgery or genioplasty is done to improve the shape and contours of the chin. It can also target the neck and jawline. The surgeon places an implant around the existing chin bone to enhance its size and shape. It also helps provides the patient a more natural and overall balanced look to the face.

Forehead and Brow lift: An eyebrow lift or a forehead lift is done to rejuvenate the area above the eyes and restore a more natural and refreshed look of the face. It involves removal of the excess skin and sagging on the forehead, followed by repositioning of the underlying muscles and tissues. It can help correct a sagging brow, eliminate deep furrows, or restore a smooth, youthful contour to the upper one-third part of the face.

Liposuction: This procedure is done to remove the fat deposits to sculpt the shape of the patient’s body parts. It is not bariatric surgery and can only sculpt the area to provide a more toned look. The surgeon removes excess fat and refines the shape and form of the body part. The doctor melts the fat, which is then suctioned out by a cannula. There are different types of liposuction techniques:

  • Tumescent Liposuction: An injection of anesthetic “tumescent” solution is applied into the area, which helps minimize the bleeding and discomfort during the procedure.
  • Ultrasound-Assisted Liposuction: The ultrasound energy is used to break up the fat deposits, which are then loosened and suctioned out of the body.
  • Laser-Assisted Liposuction: In this technique, laser energy is used to help dislodge the fat cells.

Tummy Tuck: Also called as abdominoplasty surgery, it involves removal of excess, sagging skin of the abdominal muscles, and it is tightened to correct a protruding belly. It helps provide a flatter and better-toned midsection.

It is a popular procedure and is often opted by people who underwent dramatic changes after weight loss (naturally or with surgery) or pregnancy. The surgeon can reshape and improve the contours of the abdominal area to create a more aesthetically pleasing and slimmer appearance.

Male Chest Reduction: It is one of the most effective treatments for gynecomastia. This condition means enlarged male breasts in men. The surgery removes excess fat and glandular tissue to provide a flatter, firmer and more masculine appearance to the chest.

Breast Augmentation: Augmentation mammoplasty is a surgical procedure in which the breast size is increased. It can be done with breast implants or fat transfer. Breast augmentation is done to enhance the breast profile by providing natural proportions and a more symmetrical, aesthetically pleasing look.

The choice of implant and placement of the incision is determined by the doctor as well as the patient. The commonly used breast implants are Saline and Silicone gel. It can be round or Gummy Bear based on shape.

Breast Lift: A mastopexy procedure is done to restore the firm, perky appearance of the breast that has been sagging and improve the aesthetic appearance. It restores a youthful and feminine proportion of the patient. The excess, loose skin is removed while the breast structure is reshaped.

It may also involve raising the nipple & areola into a more forward position, to reduce the stretched, large areolae and creating a better proportion of a natural-looking breast.
