What procedures are used in Uterine Fibroid Treatment?

An interventional radiologist performs the surgery under local anesthesia using fluoroscopy. A small incision is made in the skin of the groin region to access the femoral artery. A thin catheter is inserted into the femoral artery and guided to reach the uterine artery.

A contrast fluid containing iodine is then injected to map the fibroid location on a fluoroscope monitor. After that, tiny round-shaped particles of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) of the size of sand grains are injected into the artery which supplies the blood to the fibroid tumor.

This results in the blockage of the artery and within a few minutes, the blood flow gets cut off, causing the tumor to shrink. The contrast fluid is injected once more to make sure that the blood flow to the fibroids is blocked. Another uterine fibroid is treated with the same procedure. It takes around one to two hours to complete the entire procedure.

How to recover from Uterine Fibroid Embolization?

A patient is usually advised to do the following to ensure an early and smooth recovery:
  • Wear sanitary pads to absorb the blood as the first menstruation after the surgery may result in heavy blood flow
  • To walk often to decrease the risk of blood clotting
  • To wash the incision area with a mild soap
  • To avoid sexual intercourse for a few weeks
  • To avoid strenuous activity for 2 to 6 weeks

What are the Risks and Complications associated with Uterine Fibroid Embolization Treatment?

Uterine fibroid embolization is a safe technique and there are no major complications associated with this procedure. Complications may occur only in rare cases. Some of the complications may include the following:

  • Infection: Bacteria can get a site to grow in the degenerating fibroids, which may lead to endomyometritis. It is treated with the help of antibiotics. Some complex cases may require a hysterectomy.
  • Damage to the organs: There is a possible risk of the disruption of the ovarian blood supply in the case of unintended embolization of the ovary. This may lead to menopause if the patient is perimenopausal (nearing the menopause).
  • Future pregnancy-related issues: Pregnancy complications may arise in the patient but the chances are very rare. An abnormality in the placenta attaching to the uterus of one of the related complications.
