Breast lift or Mastopexy surgery

For a woman, the breasts are a representation of their feminine look and aesthetics. The cosmetic procedure of breast lift or mastopexy can help a woman, with sagging or drooping breasts, achieve more full and firm-looking breasts.

The surgery involves uplifting the breasts to a higher position, giving them a younger look. It may also include an areola reduction along with a boob lift. With this, the surgeon will be able to decrease the size of the pigmented skin around the nipple.

The surgery alone may take one to four hours, depending on the extent of the operation (tissue removal) and whether an additional procedure such as breast augmentation or breast reduction is also being performed in the same operation.

For a breast uplift, the incisions are made on the breasts, the number and placement depending on the incision techniques. The plastic surgeon will assess the anatomy and structure of the breasts during the consultation, and then suggest the most appropriate technique for a patient’s breast. They will also consider the size and shape of the breasts, along with the elasticity of the skin and the degree of breast sagging.

The breast lift surgery is followed by a significant recovery period. The patient may need to wear a compression garment for several weeks after the surgery to help reduce the swelling.

It is important to have realistic expectations from the surgery and follow all the instructions given by the doctor, to have the best outcomes.

Who may choose to have breast lift surgery?

The most common reason due to which many women choose to have breast uplift is the age-related sagging or ptosis of breasts. A number of women worldwide do not feel comfortable with the appearance of their breasts as they age.

A woman might get deeply affected by the changes in the breasts, which can be caused or stimulated by a number of reasons. This can negatively impact their confidence levels and self-esteem, particularly in the case of loss of shape or firmness. Some factors that can change the breast appearance are:

  • Pregnancy
  • Breastfeeding
  • Increasing age
  • Bodyweight fluctuation
  • Genetics

Although age is a common cause, a woman can find a solution to low self-confidence through breast lift surgery in Turkey for all kinds of reasons. Mastopexy can also be used to address several other concerns, such as an enlarged areola, the overall shape of the figure and restoring the elasticity of the skin.

With a breast lift surgery, a woman might be able to address her concerns for the following (and more):

  • Boost self-confidence
  • Improve aesthetic with a natural look
  • Regain the firmness and youthful appearance of breasts
  • Enjoy a wide variety of clothes and fashion wear
  • Look younger
  • The confidence to wear the bikinis they like

Who is a suitable candidate for breast uplift in Turkey?

A woman with optimal health status, who is not or will not be pregnant in the following months, might be suitable for breast surgery. Most women opting for a breast lift have it to treat the sagging breasts that have lost their shape and volume due to age or other reasons.

A breast lift might also be a suitable option for women who wish to address the following issues:

  • Areolas and nipples that point downwards
  • Deep mammary fold
  • Excess skin of the breast and/ or enlarged areolas
  • Asymmetry in the size of breasts

Breast lift surgery might not be recommended for women who have certain health conditions such as cardiac problems, diabetes, obesity, and lung disease. Also, if a woman wished to become pregnant in the future, the surgery might be put on hold, as per the surgeon’s suggestion for the same. This is because pregnancy can cause changes in breast size and affect the results of breast surgery.

What happens in a breast lift surgery?

Breast uplift surgery is usually performed with general anesthesia and it can be an in-patient or outpatient surgery, depending on the case. Prior to the operation, the patients are evaluated by the medical team and based on the assessment, a treatment plan is designed. Some pre-operative instructions that the breast lift patient may need to follow include:

  • Do not smoke cigarettes, chew or pipe tobacco, and drink alcohol for at least two weeks before the surgery. This is mainly because nicotine has negative effects on the circulation of the body and may affect the recovery as well as the result of breast surgery. It also increases the risk of anesthesia-related complications.
  • Stop taking certain medications such as aspirin, anti-inflammatory medication, or Vitamin E.
  • Patients will need to fast, and no food or drink should be consumed before midnight of the surgery, as they will receive sedation for surgery.
  • It is advisable to wear loose-fitting clothes and avoid anything that has to be pulled over the head.
  • Avoid makeup, hair nail polish products (sprays or gels), or false eyelashes while going for the surgery.

During the surgery, the surgeon will make incisions on the breasts through which the excess fat is removed, and the surrounding tissue are tightened to reshape and lift the breasts. Breast uplift surgery can be combined with breast enlargement surgery or breast reduction surgery in Turkey.

The basic steps of a breast uplift include:

Incision: This is the first step. There are a number of different methods of incisions that can be used in a breast lift. The surgeon will choose the most appropriate type of incision depending on the results desired by the patient. These include ‘crescent’, ‘peri-areolar/donut’, ‘vertical’ and ‘anchor’, based on the formation of incisions.

  • Crescent incision breast lift: This type of procedure is recommended for women who only need a minor lift. It involves making a single crescent-shaped incision that runs along the outer edge of the areola. The advantage of this incision is that it is subtle and offers little or no scarring as it is hidden within the darker skin around the nipple. However, the uplift will be minimal, and this technique works best for women who have minimal sagging.
  • Peri-areolar breast lift incision: This incision technique is also be known as a donut lift. It is recommended for those women to have treatment for minor to mild sagging. In this, a circular incision is made around the areola, which results in minimal scarring and a subtle lift. It involves the movement of a minimal amount of tissue and no rearrangement or movement of the inner breast.
  • Vertical breast lift incision: In this incision, there will be two cuts. One is made around the areola, and the other runs from the areola, and then down to the natural edge of the breast. The vertical technique allows the removal of more tissue and allows a more noticeable reshaping of the breast. Although scarring might be more noticeable than other techniques, it is an ideal incision for women with moderate sagging.
  • Anchor breast lift incision: As one of the most commonly used techniques for breast lift incision, it is an option for women who wish to have a more obvious lift. It involves three incisions that together form an anchor shape. One is made around the areola, the second down towards the crease of the natural breast, and the final one along the crease. This allows for a more dramatic result to the lift. It is an ideal solution for women with significant drooping or sagging. This is considered a more traditional alternative in breast lift surgeries, as a surgeon is able to remove a significant amount of tissue from the breast, compared to other techniques.

The surgeon will consider the breast size and shape as well as elasticity of the skin and the degree of breast sagging, to determine and recommend the most suitable incision method for the breast lift.

Lifting and Reshaping: This is the next step after making the incision. The surgeon will lift the underlying breast tissue and reshape it. The excess skin from the areola or from under the breasts will also be removed, to give the breast more firmness. The nipples will be re-positioned or your areola will be re-sized to match with the new shape of your breasts.

Closing the incisions: After the lifting and reshaping, the surgeon will close incisions by using stitches, skin adhesives or surgical tape. Though the incision lines are permanent, they usually fade away substantially over the course of time.

Breast Lift Recovery

The patient usually has to stay overnight at the hospital or for two nights, depending on their particular case. They are shifted to a recovery room, where a medical team closely monitors them while the effects on general anesthesia subside.

There will be some discomfort and pain during the initial days post-operatively, but this can be easily managed with pain medications. Most patients are able to return to their daily activities within 1 week after the breast lift. The gauze and drains are removed a few days later.

During the recovery period, the patient may need to wear a surgical bra to give shape and position to the recently reshaped breasts. Patients are advised to avoid all kinds of strenuous activities for 1 month following the surgery. The scars usually take several months or even a year to fade away. The swelling usually goes away day by day, but it is possible to see the final result of a breast lift in 6 months after the surgery.

It is important to take certain precautions and follows the post-operative instruction to ensure the success of the procedure. These include, but are not limited to:

Do not sleep on the stomach during the breast lift recovery as it may have a negative impact on the outcome.

Post-Operation Instructions:

  • Generally, you can expect to be bandaged right after your surgery, wearing compression garments and having surgical drains.
  • Avoid swimming pools and using creams on the treated area.
  • Avoid smoking and drinking alcohol for at least two weeks.
  • Keep the adhesive strips and dressing clean and dry before they are removed by the doctor. This is to prevent infection.
  • Take the medications as prescribed by the surgeon
  • Patients can start walking around on the same day after the surgery. It helps prevent the formation of blood clots by moving the legs frequently.
  • Wear the support dressing as instructed by the surgeon – for at least 5 days after breast lift surgery.
  • Normal activities and sports can be started in 10-14 days following the surgery.
  • Avoid exercising for the first week post-operatively. Some light movements can be resumed after a week, including low intensity, lower body exercise.
  • Avoid moving or exercises involving the upper body muscles for 3 weeks. All exercises (except strenuous ones) can be started 3 weeks after the surgery.
  • Wear a supportive bra while exercising to minimize the bounce and movement of the breasts.
  • Stay hydrated.
  • The shower can be taken 3 days after the breast lift surgery. Gently pat yourself dry using a towel or to dry the operated area.

Risks and side effects of the breast lift surgery

As with every major surgery, breast uplift is also associated with certain risks and complications. The plastic surgeon will perform medical examinations and detailed assessments of the patient’s overall health, to determine the potential risks to the patients. The medical team will also try their best to reduce the likelihood of side effects and complications.

The potential risks associated with breast uplift:

  • Allergic reaction to anesthesia
  • Infection
  • Blood clots
  • Scarring
  • Bleeding
  • Seroma
