What is the procedure to undergo radioembolization in India?

1. Before the treatment

• Before the patient undergoes TARE treatment, the doctor will schedule a consultation with the patient. The patient will be asked to bring along previous test results, including CBC, LFT, Serum Creatinine, PT/INR, etc. A fresh CT angiogram will be conducted during the appointment. 
• After a successful consultation, the date and timings for the procedure will be decided.
• The patient will be asked to exercise a few instructions before the procedure. 

1. Follow a strict medication schedule shared by the doctor.
2. Avoid the use of blood thinners like aspirin.
3. Follow a diet specified by the doctor.

2. During the treatment

• The patient is required to get admitted to the hospital at least a day before the scheduled procedure.
• Before the mapping procedure starts, the patient will be signing a consent form citing the details about TARE treatment. 
• An interventional radiologist will conduct a hepatic angiography to visualize the arterial anatomy inside the liver as well as coil the vessels that make way to healthy organs and tissues. 
• A catheter will be inserted through a small puncture in the patient’s groin during the hepatic angiography. The interventional radiologist will also release a material called Tc99m AA that will help simulate the precise diffusion of TARE particles in the liver. 
• The patient will be discharged from the hospital and given another date almost after one week. 
• During this time, the interventional radiologist and the nuclear medicine specialist will study the scans and imaging results and decide on the dose of T-90 that should be delivered inside the patient’s body. 
• On the second round of the procedure, the radiologist will use the same catheter and place it inside the hepatic artery. The TARE particles are injected inside the hepatic artery leading up to the tumors. These microspheres are made of glass or resin beads and contain Yttrium-90, a radioactive material that slowly targets and kills the cancer cells. 
• This procedure usually takes 3 to 4 hours, depending on the location and malignancy of the tumor. 

3. After the treatment

The patient will stay in the hospital for 4-5 days after the procedure. This is essential because the patient needs to be in radioactive isolation to prevent other people from unwanted radiation exposure.
