TARE Procedure Cost in India

  • TARE is a minimally-invasive procedure that involves the injection of beads filled with Yttrium-90 into the hepatic artery. The beads block the artery and deliver high radiation to the cancerous tissue.
  • TARE therapy is a palliative treatment: it helps to improve and extend the patient’s life but can’t cure the disease itself.
  • This therapy is beneficial for patients suffering from multiple or inoperable liver tumors, including primary and metastatic hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and cholangiocarcinoma.
  • The TARE procedure cost in India starts from 9,000 to 11,000 USD.
  • The average life expectancy of patients with inoperable tumors after TARE is 19 months.

Transarterial Radioembolization (TARE) is an innovative technique that serves as a perfect combination of radiation therapy and embolization to treat liver tumors. TARE is a minimally-invasive procedure that involves the injection of beads filled with Yttrium-90 into blood vessels that reach and nourish the growing tumor.

The radioactive material inside the beads delivers high doses of radiation to the cancerous cells, barring the normal tissues. This therapy is beneficial for patients suffering from multiple or inoperable liver tumors. However, it should be noted that TARE therapy is a palliative treatment: it helps to improve and extend the patient’s life but can’t cure the disease itself.

Many patients with primary & metastatic HCC, cholangiocarcinoma, and other secondary tumors travel to other countries looking for effective treatment at an affordable price. While countries like the USA, the UK, or Europe have sent a benchmark for hepatic cancer treatments, treatment in these countries may not be an economical option for many. Countries like India can offer a great alternative with the same quality of treatment at a fraction of what other countries offer.

Therefore, the TARE procedure cost in India is a huge driving factor for the continuous influx of patients with advanced and complex hepatic diseases.

What is the cost of the TARE procedure in India?

The TARE procedure cost in India starts from 9,000 to 11,000 USD. These costs depend on multiple factors, including:

  • Type and location of the hospital
  • Type, stage, and spread of liver cancer
  • Overall condition of the patient
  • Experience of the oncologist, radiologist, and the surgeon
  • Stay in the hospital
  • Cost of additional imaging tests like CT scans

Who may need to undergo a TARE procedure in India?

As mentioned before, TARE therapy is just palliative treatment. It can help to extend the patient’s life and improve the overall quality, but it can’t treat the liver tumor. TARE therapy is often advised by an oncologist in the following cases:

  • Patients who are unfit for the surgery or transplant
  • Patients suffering from primary and metastatic hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC)
  • Patients suffering from cholangiocarcinoma

There are a few cases where the patient may be advised against the treatment. These include:

  • Patients with severe liver or kidney dysfunction
  • Patients with abnormal blood clotting
  • Patients with blockage of the bile ducts

What is the procedure to undergo radioembolization in India?

1. Before the treatment

  • Before the patient undergoes TARE treatment, the doctor will schedule a consultation with the patient. The patient will be asked to bring along previous test results, including CBC, LFT, Serum Creatinine, PT/INR, etc. A fresh CT angiogram will be conducted during the appointment.
  • After a successful consultation, the date and timings for the procedure will be decided.
  • The patient will be asked to exercise a few instructions before the procedure.
  1. Follow a strict medication schedule shared by the doctor.
  2. Avoid the use of blood thinners like aspirin.
  3. Follow a diet specified by the doctor.

2. During the treatment

  • The patient is required to get admitted to the hospital at least a day before the scheduled procedure.
  • Before the mapping procedure starts, the patient will be signing a consent form citing the details about TARE treatment
  • An interventional radiologist will conduct a hepatic angiography to visualize the arterial anatomy inside the liver as well as coil the vessels that make way to healthy organs and tissues.
  • A catheter will be inserted through a small puncture in the patient’s groin during the hepatic angiography. The interventional radiologist will also release a material called Tc99m AA that will help simulate the precise diffusion of TARE particles in the liver.
  • The patient will be discharged from the hospital and given another date almost after one week.
  • During this time, the interventional radiologist and the nuclear medicine specialist will study the scans and imaging results and decide on the dose of T-90 that should be delivered inside the patient’s body.
  • On the second round of the procedure, the radiologist will use the same catheter and place it inside the hepatic artery. The TARE particles are injected inside the hepatic artery leading up to the tumors. These microspheres are made of glass or resin beads and contain Yttrium-90, a radioactive material that slowly targets and kills the cancer cells.
  • This procedure usually takes 3 to 4 hours, depending on the location and malignancy of the tumor.

3. After the treatment

The patient will stay in the hospital for 4-5 days after the procedure. This is essential because the patient needs to be in radioactive isolation to prevent other people from unwanted radiation exposure.

What are the benefits of undergoing a TARE procedure?

  • Transarterial radioembolization helps patients with complex or inoperable liver tumors to extend their lives from a few months to several years. It also paves the way to a better quality of life.
  • Radioembolization has less severe side effects in comparison to other radiation therapies.
  • The TARE procedure does not require any surgical incisions. A surgeon may make a small nick around the groin area for the insertion of a catheter.
  • Radioembolization delivers higher radiation than any external beam therapy.
